I recently spent a Friday in September at Disneyland — here is the breakdown of what our day looked like. We rope dropped, spent all afternoon at the hotel, and still had more than enough time to ride everything we wanted by the end of the day. I was with my sister, no kids on this trip. Below is the whole day, including wait times, return times, where we changed plans, and how long we spent at the hotel.

Important Update

The ride-breakdown trick is harder than it used to be. When a ride you hold a Lightning Lane for breaks down, it's supposed to convert into a Multiple Experiences Pass (a flexible pass good on lots of rides). That still happens, but Disney has tightened it up. A few things I noticed this trip, and that others are reporting: when a ride goes down, Disney now pushes the return time out a few hours fast, so grabbing a fresh Lightning Lane on a just-closed ride rarely works. The conversion to a Multiple Experiences Pass didn't happen automatically for me until about 30 minutes into my window. And on Matterhorn, we scanned in, the ride closed right after, and they initially said no Multiple Experiences Passes because people could just wait — but when I showed a cast member my just-scanned pass, they gave me one and we left without waiting. So the trick still somewhat works, but you have to pay attention and sometimes advocate for yourself. It is not as great as it used to be.

Our Full Day Timeline

Here's the whole day, hour by hour.

Approximate time What we did
7:06 a.m. Left the Fairfield Anaheim and walked to Disneyland.
7:15 a.m. Through security and in line at the park entrance.
About 7:30 a.m. Soft entry into Main Street area / rope drop wait in front of the castle.
7:35 a.m. Indiana was closed for refurbishment. Booked Runaway Railway as our first Lightning Lane hoping it would be closed. It was not, so modified it to Space Mountain and then to a return time in the evening. We had to modify it a few times to get the time we wanted.
8:00 a.m. Ran to Peter Pan after starting there at rope drop.
8:15 a.m. Alice in Wonderland.
8:30 a.m. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
8:40 a.m. Snow White and Pinocchio.
8:50–9:03 a.m. Big Thunder: joined the queue at 8:50, waited about five minutes, finished at 9:03.
9:03 a.m. Headed toward Matterhorn (short wait), noticed Rise of the Resistance at 35 min, pivoted to Rise. Posted wait was 45 minutes by arrival but we hopped in line anyway.
About 9:35 a.m. While in line for Rise, booked Haunted Mansion as our second Lightning Lane with an 11:00 return. Modified later to 12:00.
By 10:00 a.m. Finished Rise. Roughly 45 minutes total from joining the queue to exiting, including the ride.
After 10:00 a.m. Winnie the Pooh: nearly a walk-on, about a one-minute wait. Good to grab as we walked past.
10:15 a.m. Hopped in line for Pirates — about a 10-minute line. The ride stopped while we were on it for another 10 min.
10:50 a.m. Jungle Cruise: about a ten-minute wait.
11:15 a.m. Lunch at Alien Pizza Planet. The sun-dried tomato pasta is great!
11:50 a.m. Astro Orbitor: a few minutes' wait. While in line we booked our next Lightning Lane — Tiana's, return time 12:15.
12:30 p.m. Rode Haunted Mansion using Lightning Lane.
1:00 p.m. Rode Tiana's using Lightning Lane and got soaked. Headed back to the hotel to change and rest from the early morning.
On the walk back Stopped at McDonald's for a Diet Coke.
About 1:40 p.m. Back at the Fairfield.
1:40–5:40 p.m. Hotel break — we had been at California Adventure late the night before so we needed a nap! I kept booking Lightning Lanes every two hours from the hotel and modified the ones we had to times we liked. I set an alarm every two hours to remember to book!
5:40 p.m. Left the hotel and walked back to Disneyland. Entered the park, grabbed a churro, walked to Small World.
6:00 p.m. Rode it's a small world. Posted wait: five minutes; actual: about one minute.
6:10 p.m. Storybook Land Canal Boats: posted five-minute wait, actual closer to ten minutes.
6:35 p.m. Rode Runaway Railway using Lightning Lane. Entered around 6:35, finished at 6:55.
7:00 p.m. Alice had shut down and just reopened. Noticed the short line as we walked past and rode again with about a ten-minute standby wait.
7:18 p.m. Entered Matterhorn's Lightning Lane. It broke down before we rode, and we received a replacement pass. They were not offering these — we asked a worker and requested one since we had just scanned in with our Lightning Lane passes. Don't forget to ask for things like this!
7:53 p.m. Entered Space Mountain's Lightning Lane.
After Space Mountain Stopped for another churro to recuperate from being shaken about on Space Mountain. Old Me cannot ride what Young Me used to ride…
8:30 p.m. Rode Big Thunder using Lightning Lane. A fun one to ride at night!
8:50 p.m. Rode Buzz Lightyear using Lightning Lane. My favorite ride — if it were up to me I would spend all morning riding this over and over when the lines are short!
9:00 p.m. Rode Buzz again using the Matterhorn Multiple Experiences pass. The worker was aghast to see us use such a valuable pass on Buzz, which only had a 15-min line. LOL.
9:20 p.m. One of us bought a corn dog at Little Red Wagon (about seven minutes); the other found a fireworks spot near Candy Palace.
9:30–9:45 p.m. Watched fireworks from Main Street.
After fireworks Stopped to get a pin at the shop on Main Street.
10:00 p.m. Headed to the hotel with unused Lightning Lanes and a Multiple Experiences pass from Roger Rabbit breaking down.
About 10:15 p.m. Back at the hotel for the night.

Getting There Before Rope Drop

We did the typical soft entry — through security and in line before the official opening, then walked in a little before rope drop. Not first to the front, but close.

At our first booking window I grabbed Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway as our first Lightning Lane (Indiana Jones was down for refurbishment), then modified it twice to push it to the evening. Tip: book something the moment your window opens, then move the return time later — don’t wait to book when the return time is what you want.

We headed straight to Peter Pan at rope drop. My take: Peter Pan is the one Fantasyland ride whose line explodes early and never comes down — it'll be 40 minutes all day. If you're close to the front, ride it first. Otherwise skip it in the morning and don't burn rope-drop time standing there.

Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland are great rides to rope drop in Fantasyland.

Changing Plans for Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance is such a visually spectacular ride!

When we saw Rise of the Resistance posted at 35 minutes mid-morning, we pivoted straight over. Why: a specific posting like that usually means the ride just came back from a breakdown and the real line is shorter than the sign. It had crept to 45 min by the time we arrived, but with Indiana closed and most of our morning rides already done, we decided to wait — about 30 minutes in standby.

While we waited I booked Haunted Mansion as our next Lightning Lane and later pushed the return time back. Haunted Mansion Holiday — the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay — gets very busy at in Sept-Dec so I wanted it locked in early.

The Haunted Mansion at Halloween is the best!

A Note on Midday Rides

The late morning was a string of short waits — the timeline above has the play by play. A few notes: if you want to ride Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Big Thunder, or Matterhorn, more than once, do them in the morning and use the Lightning Lane later when lines are long. If you want to ride Tiana’s multiple times, ride it back-to-back so you only get soaked one time. At night there's often no wait and they'll let you stay on and re-ride. My kids love this.

The sun dried tomato pasta at Pizza Planet is actually really good!

Hotel Break

We walked back to the hotel mid-afternoon (with a McDonald's Diet Coke stop on the way). I love an afternoon break, and it's the whole reason staying across the street is worth it — being able to walk back, change out of wet clothes, and nap is a game-changer, especially with younger kids.

The one thing to keep doing during a break: book Lightning Lanes every two hours and keep moving return times into the evening. Disney lets you book your next one after you redeem a pass or after two hours pass, and the app shows your next eligible time. I set an alarm every two hours and modified our existing passes to later slots. That’s how you walk back into the park at night with a stack of rides already lined up.

Back for an Evening of Short Waits

Don’t miss the churros, they are the best!

Evenings are when a low-crowd day pays off. Our standby rides — small world, Storybook Land, and Alice (which had just reopened) — were all ten minutes or less, and the rest of the night ran on Lightning Lanes.

One thing worth knowing: a Lightning Lane isn't instant. There's still a short queue plus the ride itself, so budget 20–25 minutes total for something like Runaway Railway — that's the whole visit, not the length of the ride.

Two of our rides broke down while we held passes — Matterhorn and, earlier, Roger Rabbit — and both converted to replacement passes. We didn’t end up riding Matterhorn; after Space Mountain I was done getting bounced around (I'm not a roller-coaster person anymore). Note: check the eligible attractions on any replacement pass — they're not all interchangeable, and some won't work on the big coasters. We spent our Matterhorn pass on Buzz Lightyear. Could we have squeezed more theoretical value out of it on a bigger ride? Sure. But we wanted Buzz, so we rode Buzz.

A Corn Dog and Fireworks

The buildings on main street have lights and fun things going on during the fireworks.

View of the fireworks from Main Street.

We split up near the end of the night — one corn dog run at the Little Red Wagon, one scout for a fireworks spot down Main Street.

Fireworks tip: closer to the castle looks incredible but is a crush to get out of. Farther down Main Street means an easier walk out — and on a low-crowd night you can grab a spot a few minutes before showtime without holding it all evening.

We did a little shopping after. I'm not a big souvenir person, but I've started a pin board and pick up one pin per trip — my kids have their own boards too. It's been a great way to keep the memories without filling the house with giant souvenirs. By 10 pm the park was emptying out and wait times were dropping fast, so if you're a night owl you can get it a ton of rides. We still had a couple of unused Lightning Lanes and a Multiple Experiences pass, but we were tired, so we called it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I rope drop at Disneyland?

I skip Rise of the Resistance at opening (long walk, often down early) and head to the Fantasyland dark rides, which have no other way to skip the line. Peter Pan first (its line explodes early), then Alice, Mr. Toad, Snow White, and Pinocchio, then Big Thunder. If you'd rather start with the bigger thrill rides, I have a separate strategy for that too.

Is a midday break worth it at Disneyland?

For us, absolutely. Staying across the street makes a break like this realistic — a drive-and-park hotel usually doesn't, and that's OK too. You can take a long sit-down lunch instead.

How does Lightning Lane work now?

Disney's current paid line-skip is Lightning Lane Multi Pass. You book a return time, then book your next one after you redeem it or after two hours pass. The app shows your next eligible booking time. You can keep booking and modifying all day, even from your hotel during a break.

What happens if a ride breaks down while I hold a Lightning Lane?

Your reservation can convert into a replacement (Multiple Experiences) pass good on many rides. We got passes from Matterhorn and Roger Rabbit closures this day. Check the eligible attractions on any replacement pass — they aren't all interchangeable.

Where's the best place to watch Disneyland fireworks?

Main Street is great, and on a lower-crowd night you usually don't need to save a spot far ahead — just hop on a little before showtime. Closer to the castle looks best but is packed at exit; farther down Main Street means an easier walk out.

Should I stay across the street from Disneyland?

If you want a real midday break, yes. Walking back to a hotel across the street (like the Fairfield) makes it realistic to rest and return for the evening.
