Disneyland Day Plan: How to Ride Everything With Minimal Waiting in Line
Before you start: check what rides are temporarily closed for refurbishment before your trip. The Disneyland app and website list current closures. This plan assumes all rides are operating, so adjust accordingly.
This plan starts in Fantasyland. If your group wants to rope drop Space Mountain or Rise of the Resistance instead, I have a separate plan for that.
You will need Lightning Lane Multi Pass for this plan. If you have not read my guide on how Lightning Lane works or my strategy for the modify trick, read those first. If you have kids who will not be riding all the rides, don’t forget to ask for a parent swap pass. If any rides are down or Lightning Lanes are not available, skip and come back to them later. Book a Lightning Lane for the next ride mentioned in the plan.
Before the Park Opens (7:00-8:00 AM)
Arrive at security by 7:00 for an 8:00 opening. Be through security and at the park gates by 7:10. Around 7:15-7:30, they let people onto Main Street. Walk to the rope drop area and stand on the right side of the castle facing it. This puts you closest to Fantasyland.
While you wait, have one person book your first Lightning Lane as soon as your group has scanned through the gates. Book Indiana Jones. It frequently opens late, and if it does, your pass converts to a Multiple Experiences pass — a free wild card. An 8:00-9:00 return time is ideal.
Eat breakfast in line. We pick up Panera or McDonald's on the walk over from the hotel. Do not waste morning time sitting down for breakfast inside the park.
Rope Drop: Fantasyland (8:00-8:50 AM)
Prioritize: Alice, Dumbo, Mr. Toad, Pinocchio, Snow White. Add Matterhorn if the line is under 10 min. Save Peter Pan, Casey Jr., Storybook Boats, and Teacups for later or add if you have extra time.
The rope drops at 8:00. Go time.
If you are at the very front of the crowd
Run through the castle to Peter Pan. Be one of the first few on the ride. If you have a stroller, one person parks it by Dumbo while the rest run to Peter Pan. The stroller person joins the group in line.
If you are not at the front (most people)
Skip Peter Pan. Do not spend 20 minutes in that line during the first hour. Take the right side path around the castle and run to Alice in Wonderland. Peter Pan has a 35-minute line in the afternoon. You are not saving time by waiting for it now unless you walk right on.
The Fantasyland blitz
After Alice (or Peter Pan), hit Dumbo, Mr. Toad, Snow White, and Pinocchio. These rides are under five minutes each and packed close together. The order is flexible after Alice and Dumbo — just watch the app and hit whichever has a 5-minute wait. If anything jumps to 15 minutes, skip it and come back.
After these five rides, hit Matterhorn if the line is still under 10 minutes. If it is a walk-on, ride it twice. If you have older kids who want to ride Matterhorn while you take younger kids on Dumbo, split up — the rides are right next to each other. You can knock out all of this in about 45 minutes.
Lightning Lane check-in (around 8:30)
Check if your Indiana Multi Pass converted to a Multiple Experiences pass. If it did not, modify the return time and push it out to around 11:00-1:00. Keep modifying over the next half hour to lock in that window.
Toontown (8:50-9:40 AM)
Prioritize: Meet characters, Mickey's Runaway Railway. Add Gadget's Go Coaster and Roger Rabbit if lines are short.
Get to Toontown before it gets busy. If you notice Toontown lines building on the app while you are still in Fantasyland, skip your last ride and head over.
If you have little kids, go see Mickey or Minnie first — the meet-and-greet line should still be about 10 minutes this early. If characters are not a priority, go straight to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway.
A note on Runaway Railway: this is a ride for all ages. It is awesome. Do not skip it because you think it is for toddlers. The line is usually about 5 minutes in the first hour after Toontown opens. If the line is longer, get a Lightning Lane when eligible — the return time should be quick.
After the railroad, hit Gadget's Go Coaster if the line is under 10 minutes, then Roger Rabbit if under 10. Roger Rabbit can easily be saved for later.
Lightning Lane check-in (around 9:30)
Your booking clock is up from the 7:30 Indiana Jones booking. If you need a Lightning Lane for Runaway Railway, grab it with a short return time, ride it, then book Big Thunder Mountain — return time should be around 10:00-12:00. If Runaway Railway is still a short standby wait, skip the Lightning Lane for it and get one for Big Thunder.
Mid-Morning: Adventureland and Frontierland (9:40-12:00 PM)
Prioritize: Pirates, Big Thunder, Indiana Jones, Haunted Mansion or Tiana’s. Jungle Cruise if the line is manageable.
Leave Toontown and head toward Adventureland. You can hit Small World on the way out if the line is short. If it is after 10:00, save Small World for later — you can almost always grab a Lightning Lane with an immediate return time for it.
Work through this area by prioritizing your Lightning Lane return windows. Arrive at each ride right when the return time starts and book your next Lightning Lane as soon as you scan in.
Big Thunder-ride with your Lightning Lane right when the window opens. Get a new Lightning Lane for Haunted Mansion (or Tiana’s, choose one with a short return time) or Space Mountain-see note below.
Jungle Cruise has no Lightning Lane. Hit it early while the line is still 15-20 minutes. By 11:00 it will be 30-plus. If it is already long, skip and fit it in later.
Pirates of the Caribbean has no Lightning Lane either. The standby line is usually 15 minutes in the late morning. Fit it in between Lightning Lane rides before 11:00 if possible.
Indiana Jones with your Lightning Lane. If you booked it at 7:30 and modified to an 11:00-1:00 window, ride it when the time comes. Indiana is usually the first Lightning Lane to sell out, sometimes within an hour of park opening. Booking it early is critical.
Haunted Mansion with your Lightning Lane (or Tiana’s if that is the Lightning Lane you have).
Keep an eye on Space Mountain availability. It sells out by early afternoon. If you see return times getting late and you have not booked it yet, grab Space Mountain instead of Haunted Mansion/Tiana’s. Haunted Mansion and Tiana’s are easier to get later.
Filling in the gaps
Between Lightning Lane rides, fit in: Tiana's Bayou Adventure (single rider line available — you will get wet, so do this right before your break or have some riders sit it out), Winnie the Pooh (short standby), and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Smugglers Run usually has about a 10-minute line and a single rider option.
Rise of the Resistance: if you see the line drop to 25-30 minutes, run over and do it. Otherwise, save it for the afternoon.
Tiki Room is a great rest stop anytime — no line, air conditioning, runs about every 30 minutes, and the show is 15 minutes. Have a Dole Whip while you wait. Pirate's Island (take the wooden ferry below Haunted Mansion) is a hidden gem — no lines, no crowds, kids can run around exploring caves and rope bridges. It closes around 5:00 PM. We usually go after lunch before our break.
Skip for now: Star Tours, Finding Nemo Submarines, Storybook Boats. Fit these in at the end of the day or skip entirely.
Lunch and Afternoon Break (12:00-5:00 PM)
By noon you have probably ridden 12-15 attractions. That is a great morning.
Around noon or 1:00, book a Lightning Lane with about an hour return time. Have lunch while you wait. Ride that attraction, book another, then head back to the hotel for a break. If you have not done Tiana’s or Haunted Mansion, prioritize getting those Lightning Lanes first.
From the hotel, stack your evening. Every two hours, book a new Lightning Lane and modify return times to cluster between 5:00-8:00 PM. Rides like Buzz Lightyear, Autopia, Tiana's, Small World, and Roger Rabbit almost always have availability with short return times, so save those for evening fill-ins. Book popular rides first: Space Mountain if you have not locked it in, Haunted Mansion if you missed it, or Matterhorn for a second ride. For a full breakdown of stacking, read my Lightning Lane Strategy Guide.
Rise of the Resistance: afternoon strategy
Rise frequently closes temporarily throughout the day. When it reopens, the app immediately posts a 40-45 minute wait, but the actual line is often 25-30 minutes if you get there quickly. Watch for reopenings and head over if the timing works.
If it does not close, plan to wait about 45 minutes during the afternoon/evening. It is one of the best rides Disney has ever built and worth riding. If the line is over 60 minutes, buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass or wait until evening for lines to drop.
Evening Return (5:00-8:30 PM)
You walk back into the park with three to five stacked Lightning Lanes. This is the best part of the day.
Ride, scan in, ride, scan in. Book new Lightning Lanes each time — Smugglers Run, Buzz, and Autopia still have availability in the evening. Weave those in between your stacked rides. Use any Multiple Experiences passes you earned during the day. Lines are longest now, so your wild cards are most valuable.
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is fun at night. The area looks great after dark and crowds are usually lighter than the rest of the park. Big Thunder and the Teacups are also fun at night.
Parades and fireworks
I do not save a parade spot in advance. I find a place along the route where they are putting up ropes right before it starts and stand behind people. It works fine.
For fireworks, stand on Main Street back toward the park entrance. The view is great and you can leave quickly. If you stand near the castle, you will be stuck in a massive crowd trying to exit.
Pro tip: if you watch fireworks from behind the castle near Dumbo, a line forms near Mr. Toad that leads to Peter Pan when Fantasyland reopens after the show. That line is only 5-10 minutes. If you skipped Peter Pan in the morning, this is your chance.
What About the Rides We Skipped?
If you have a second day at Disneyland (and I recommend at least two), everything you missed fits easily into a morning where you already knocked out the major attractions: Star Tours, Finding Nemo, Storybook Boats, Casey Jr., and second rides on your favorites.
If you only have one day, add Star Tours and Storybook Boats during the evening when your Lightning Lane stack runs out.
FAQ
How many rides can I do in one day with this plan? 15-20 is realistic for a family. On a less crowded day with aggressive stacking, experienced visitors can hit 20-25.
What if we cannot get to the park by 7:00 AM? This plan still works if you arrive by 8:00. You will miss the first wave of walk-on waits, but you can still get 5-6 rides done in the first 90 minutes and stack effectively for the evening.
Do we need Park Hopper for this plan? No. This is a Disneyland-only day plan. If you want to split between both parks, see my 3-Day Disneyland Itinerary.
What if my kids are too young for the big rides? Skip Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Big Thunder, and Indiana Jones. Replace them with more time in Toontown, character meet-and-greets, Storybook Boats, and shows like Tiki Room. You can also use Parent Swap on the big rides so each parent gets a turn. I have a more information in my plan for families with little kids.
Should I buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass? Yes. This plan assumes Multi Pass. You can have a solid day without it if you rope drop hard and take an afternoon break, but Multi Pass is what makes the evening stacking strategy possible.
What if it rains? Disneyland does not close for rain except in extreme weather. Most rides stay open and crowds thin out dramatically. Bring ponchos or full rain suits, and umbrellas.
Can someone manage my Lightning Lanes remotely? Yes. Once everyone has scanned into the park, anyone with the Disneyland app and your linked tickets can book and modify from anywhere. I have done this for family from my couch. It actually works better because the person managing is not distracted by the park.
