Disneyland Thrill Ride Day Plan: Rope Drop Space Mountain or Rise of the Resistance
Before you start: check what rides are temporarily closed for refurbishment. The Disneyland app lists current closures. This plan assumes all rides are operating.
This plan is for groups who want to start with a big ride instead of Fantasyland. I am giving you two rope drop options — Space Mountain (my recommendation) or Rise of the Resistance (riskier but rewarding). After that, you pick from three morning strategies depending on what your group cares about most.
If you would rather start in Fantasyland, I have a separate day plan for that. Most families with younger kids should start there.
You will need Lightning Lane Multi Pass. If you have not read my guides on how Lightning Lane works and the modify trick, start there.
Before the Park Opens (7:00-8:00 AM)
Arrive at security by 7:00 for an 8:00 opening. Through security and at the gates by 7:10. Around 7:30 they let people onto Main Street.
If you are rope dropping Space Mountain, stand at the Tomorrowland entrance, to the right of the castle. If you are rope dropping Rise of the Resistance, stand at a rope drop facing the castle and you will run through the castle.
As soon as your group scans through the gates, book your first Lightning Lane. Book Indiana Jones. It frequently opens late and may convert to a free Multiple Experiences pass. An 8:00-9:00 return time is ideal.
Rope Drop Option 1: Space Mountain (My Recommendation)
Space Mountain is close to the rope drop area, it opens reliably, and Matterhorn is right next door. You knock out two major thrill rides in 20 minutes.
Rope drops at 8:00. Walk fast to Space Mountain. You should be on within minutes. As soon as you get off, head to Matterhorn. The line should be under 10 minutes. If it is a walk-on, ride it twice.
Rope Drop Option 2: Rise of the Resistance
This is riskier. Rise is far from everything else, and it sometimes does not open on time. If you run over there and it is delayed, you have wasted your most valuable morning time in the farthest corner of the park.
Before you commit: ask a cast member at the rope drop if Rise is opening on time. If it is not, switch to the Space Mountain plan or run to Fantasyland. Do not wait around in Galaxy's Edge hoping it opens soon.
If Rise is confirmed open, run through the castle, hang a left past Pinocchio, then run through Galaxy's Edge all the way to Rise. This route matters — the line forms from this direction. Coming in through Adventureland puts you in the wrong direction for the line. If you are near the front of the crowd you should be off the ride by about 8:25.
Lightning Lane check-in (around 8:30, both options)
Check if your Indiana Jones pass converted to a Multiple Experiences pass. If not, modify the return time and push it out to around 11:00-1:00. Keep modifying over the next half hour to lock that window in.
Choose Your Morning: Three Strategies After Rope Drop
You have knocked out one or two big rides. It is about 8:20-8:30. Now pick the morning strategy that fits your group.
Option A: Fantasyland Catch-Up
Best for: families with younger kids or groups who want the classic rides.
Head to Fantasyland. You have missed the very first wave of walk-ons, but lines should still be short. Hit Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo (or skip and do astro orbiters instead if it has a shorter line), then whichever rides have 5 to 10-minute waits — Mr. Toad, Snow White, Pinocchio, Teacups, Casey Jr Train. If anything is more than a 15 min line skip and do it later. You can get through 4-5 rides in about 40 minutes. Then head to Toontown for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway (walk on if the line is short, Lightning Lane if it has grown). After Toontown, head to Adventureland around 10:00. Follow the mid-morning plan below. For the full Fantasyland strategy, see my Fantasyland day plan.
Option B: Frontierland and Adventureland Loop
Best for: thrill seekers who want to knock out every big ride in the morning and do not care about Fantasyland rides.
Adventureland and Frontierland are less crowded than Fantasyland early in the morning. Most of the rope drop crowd goes to Fantasyland or Tomorrowland, which means the left side of the park has shorter lines for the first couple of hours.
After Space Mountain and Matterhorn (or Rise), head straight to Big Thunder Mountain. It should still be under 10 minutes at this point. Ride it without a Lightning Lane now and you can get a Lightning Lane for a second ride in the afternoon. Then hit Tiana's Bayou Adventure — it usually has a short line in the morning. After Tiana's, work through Pirates (10-15 min standby), Jungle Cruise (try to get there before it hits 30 minutes, which usually happens around 11:00), and use your Indiana Jones Lightning Lane when the modified return window arrives.
Get Haunted Mansion on a Lightning Lane. If you can book it by 9:30-10:00, you should have a return time around 11:00. Fit it in between Pirates and Jungle Cruise.
With this strategy you can knock out Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Big Thunder, Tiana's, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Indiana Jones, and Haunted Mansion by noon. That is eight major rides before lunch. You save Fantasyland, Toontown, and Mickey's Runaway Railway for the afternoon and evening using Lightning Lanes — all of which are easy to get with short return times throughout the day.
Option C: Tomorrowland Sweep
Best for: groups who want to clear out the Tomorrowland area completely before moving on.
After Space Mountain and Matterhorn, stay in Tomorrowland. Ride Buzz Lightyear (should be a short standby), Astro Orbiters if your group wants them (5-10 minute line early), and Autopia if it is a priority. You can clear this entire area of the park in about an hour. Then head to Adventureland and follow the mid-morning plan below. This option means you will not need Lightning Lanes for Buzz or Autopia later.
Mid-Morning Forward (10:00 AM-12:00 PM)
All three morning strategies converge here. By 10:00 you should have 5-8 rides done depending on which path you took.
If you did Option A (Fantasyland)
Prioritize: Indiana Jones, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Tiana's.
Work through Adventureland and Frontierland based on your Lightning Lane return times. Arrive at each ride right when the window starts and book your next Lightning Lane as soon as you scan in. Hit Jungle Cruise and Pirates on standby while the lines are still manageable. Keep an eye on Space Mountain availability if you have not ridden it — it sells out by early afternoon.
If you did Option B (Frontierland loop)
Prioritize: Toontown, Mickey's Runaway Railway, any remaining Adventureland rides.
You have already done most of the big rides. Head to Toontown for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway — grab a Lightning Lane if the standby line is more than 10 minutes. See Mickey or Minnie if you have younger kids. Then fill in anything you missed: Winnie the Pooh, Smugglers Run or wander in Galaxy's Edge. This is a great time to ride Rise of the Resistance if you did the Space Mountain start — watch for the line to drop or for a reopening after a temporary closure.
If you did Option C (Tomorrowland sweep)
Prioritize: Indiana Jones, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Tiana's.
Same as Option A. You cleared Tomorrowland so now you work through the left side of the park.
Filling in the gaps (all options)
Rise of the Resistance: if you have not ridden it yet, watch the app. If the line drops to 30 minutes, run over. Rise frequently closes temporarily — when it reopens, the app posts 40-45 minutes but the actual wait is often 25-30 if you get there fast. If the line stays over 60 minutes, buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass or wait until evening.
Tiki Room is a great rest stop — no line, air conditioning, about 15 minutes. Pirate's Island (wooden ferry below Haunted Mansion) is a hidden gem for kids. Closes around 5:00 PM.
Skip for now: Star Tours, Finding Nemo, Storybook Boats. Fit these in at the end of the day or skip entirely.
Lunch and Afternoon Break (12:00-5:00 PM)
By noon you should have 10-15 rides done. Have lunch, ride one more Lightning Lane, then head to the hotel.
From the hotel, stack your evening. Every two hours book a new Lightning Lane and modify return times to cluster between 5:00-8:00 PM. This is where you fill in what you missed in the morning.
If you did Option A (Fantasyland), stack: Space Mountain (if you still need it), Big Thunder for a second ride, any Adventureland rides you missed.
If you did Option B (Frontierland loop), stack: Mickey's Runaway Railway if you did not get to Toontown, Small World, Matterhorn for a second ride, and any Fantasyland Lightning Lanes you want (Roger Rabbit, Small World). Fantasyland rides like Alice and Dumbo do not have Lightning Lanes, so ride those in the evening on standby when you have gaps between stacked passes — lines are typically shorter than the 2:00-4:00 PM peak.
If you did Option C (Tomorrowland sweep), stack the same as Option A. You already cleared Tomorrowland so you have more Lightning Lane slots for the big rides.
Rides like Buzz Lightyear, Autopia, Small World, Roger Rabbit, and Smugglers Run almost always have Lightning Lane availability with short return times, so save those for evening fill-ins. Full stacking strategy in my Lightning Lane guide.
Evening Return (5:00-8:30 PM)
Walk back into the park with three to five stacked Lightning Lanes. Ride, scan in, ride, scan in. Book new Lightning Lanes as you go. Use any Multiple Experiences passes now when lines are longest.
This is also when you fit in whatever your morning strategy skipped. If you did the Frontierland loop and skipped Fantasyland, ride Alice, Dumbo, and any other rides on standby between your stacked Lightning Lanes — evening lines in Fantasyland are usually shorter than mid-afternoon. If you did the Fantasyland start and still need a second ride on a thrill ride, your stacked Lightning Lanes should cover it.
Galaxy's Edge is great at night. If you saved Smugglers Run, do it now. The area is worth visiting just for the atmosphere.
Parades, fireworks, and the Peter Pan trick
For the parade, find a spot along the route right before it starts. No need to camp out. The best spots for not camping out will be where the workers rope off- corners, street crossings. Ask a worker where ropes will go up.
For fireworks, stand on Main Street toward the park entrance for the fastest exit.
Pro tip: watch fireworks from behind the castle near Dumbo. When Fantasyland reopens after the show, a line forms near Mr. Toad that leads to Peter Pan with only a 5-10 minute wait. If you skipped Fantasyland all day, this is the time to knock out Peter Pan.
Which Combination Should You Pick?
Space Mountain start + Frontierland loop is my recommendation for groups of older kids and adults who want to maximize big rides. You get Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Big Thunder, Tiana's, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Indiana Jones, and Haunted Mansion all done before lunch. That is an amazing morning.
Space Mountain start + Fantasyland catch-up is the most balanced option. You get two thrill rides at rope drop and still hit the classic park rides before Toontown fills up.
Space Mountain start + Tomorrowland sweep works if clearing one area completely appeals to your group. It is the most walking-efficient morning but means more Lightning Lane juggling in the afternoon. The lightning lanes for Buzz and Autopia can generally be picked up later in the day with a short return time.
Rise of the Resistance start + any of the three options works, but you sacrifice 10-15 minutes of prime morning time getting to and from Galaxy's Edge. Only do this if Rise is your absolute top priority and you have confirmed it is opening on time.
FAQ
Can I do the Frontierland loop and still ride Fantasyland rides? Yes. Fantasyland rides do not have Lightning Lanes, so you ride them on standby in the evening between your stacked Lightning Lane rides. Alice and Dumbo usually have shorter lines in the evening than mid-afternoon. You can also get Mickey's Runaway Railway on a Lightning Lane with a short return time almost any time of day.
What if Rise is not opening on time? Switch to the Space Mountain plan or run to Fantasyland. Do not wait around in Galaxy's Edge.
Is the single rider line good for Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, or Matterhorn? All three have single rider lines. They are great for fitting in a second ride later in the day without using a Lightning Lane.
How is this different from the Fantasyland day plan? The Fantasyland plan gets you 6-8 short rides in the first 50 minutes. This plan gets you 2-3 big rides first and then branches into three different strategies. The Fantasyland plan is better for total ride count. This plan is better if thrill rides are the priority.
What if I want to do Big Thunder twice? With the Frontierland loop, ride it on standby in the morning (under 10 minutes early), then grab a Lightning Lane for a second ride in the afternoon. Two rides on Big Thunder without waiting more than 10 minutes total.
Should I buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass? Yes. The stacking strategy is what makes the evening productive and lets you fill in missed rides.
