California Adventure Day Plan: Ride Strategy for Families
Before you start: check what rides are temporarily closed for refurbishment. The Disneyland app lists current closures.
California Adventure is a harder park to plan than Disneyland. There are fewer rides and they are spread farther apart. Lightning Lane availability goes faster here too, especially for Guardians and Toy Story Midway Mania. If you have a park hopper pass: California Adventureland works great in combination with Disneyland-one park in the morning and one in the later afternoon. If you have a strategy, you can ride everything in this park in a single day without much waiting. If you have young children be sure to utilize the parent swap system.
I have not included the rides around the pier in this plan. They feel more like generic theme park rides so are lower priority but fit them in when you can if interested. My kids like the swings and the Golden Zephyr and we skip the rest. Be aware the ferris wheel takes forever!
You will need Lightning Lane Multi Pass. If you have not read my guides on how Lightning Lane works and the modify trick, start there.
Before the Park Opens
Arrive at security 45 minutes to an hour before park opening. Get through security and to the gates early. They let people onto Buena Vista Street before the park officially opens, so get in position.
As soon as your group scans through the gates, book your first Lightning Lane. Book Guardians of the Galaxy. It is the first Lightning Lane to sell out in this park, often within the first hour or two. If you wait until mid-morning it may already be gone. Lock it in now even if the return time is far out — you can modify it later.
The Radiator Springs Decision
Before we get into the plan, you need to decide how you are going to handle Radiator Springs Racers. This ride does not have a regular Lightning Lane. Your options are: buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass ($15-35 per person), use the single rider line, rope drop it, or just wait in the standby line.
My recommendation for most families
Do not rope drop Radiator Springs unless you are literally at the very front of the rope drop crowd. Everyone rushes there at opening and the line jumps to 60 minutes within five minutes. You will burn your entire first hour on one ride while the rest of the park has short lines.
Instead, use single rider for anyone tall enough. The single rider line at Radiator Springs moves reasonably fast and riders from the same group often end up in the same car anyway. For younger kids who need to ride with a parent, buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass or wait for the line to dip — it sometimes drops around 11:00 AM or near park close. Cars Land is beautiful at night, so waiting until evening is not a bad option.
If your family absolutely must ride together and you do not want to pay for the Single Pass, rope drop it. Be at the gates early and position yourself toward Cars Land at the rope. Again, don’t stand in line for an hour in the morning, that is valuable time. Only do Radiator Springs in the morning if you are at the front of rope drop.
Rope Drop: Avengers Campus and Pixar Pier (8:00-9:30 AM)
Prioritize: WEB SLINGERS, Toy Story Midway Mania, Incredicoaster. Add Monster’s Inc and Ariel if lines are short.
Assuming you are not rope dropping Radiator Springs, here is where to start. Head to WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure in Avengers Campus. It is one of the more popular rides and the line builds quickly. If you are near the front of the rope drop crowd, you should walk right on. If the line is already 20 minutes by the time you get there, grab a Lightning Lane for it later and pivot to Pixar Pier instead.
After WEB SLINGERS (or instead of it), head to Pixar Pier. Toy Story Midway Mania and Incredicoaster both have short lines in the first hour. Toy Story Lightning Lanes sell out somewhat fast but if you ride it on standby you should be able to pick up Lighning Lane for a second ride later. Incredicoaster has a single rider line if you want to ride twice without waiting.
On the way to or from the pier, hit Monster’s Inc and/or Ariel if the lines are short. Both should be under 10 minutes in the first hour and are quick rides. Ariel almost never has a long line, so you can save it for later if needed.
Lightning Lane check-in (around 8:30-9:00)
Check your Guardians return time-you want it somewhere around 9:30-10:30. When your booking clock is up (two hours from your first booking or after you scan into your first Lightning Lane ride), book Soarin'. Soarin' Lightning Lanes move fast in 2026, especially with the new Soarin' Across America version launching July 2. Get it early.
Mid-Morning (9:30-12:00 PM)
Prioritize: Guardians, Soarin', Goofy's Sky School. Cars Land rides if lines are manageable.
Use your Guardians Lightning Lane when the return window arrives. Ride it and book your next Lightning Lane immediately. Guardians is intense — not everyone in your group may want to ride. If you have riders sitting out, they can hit the Animation Academy or Turtle Talk with Crush nearby. Both are great for younger kids and have no real line. Animation Academy and Turtle Talk run about every 30 minutes.
Ride Soarin' on your Lightning Lane. This ride takes a while — about 35-40 minutes including the queue and flight, even with Lightning Lane. Plan for that.
Between Lightning Lanes, work through what you have not hit yet. Goofy's Sky School is a fun ride that my kids go on over and over. (My kids love it but I think it is skip-able.) It can have a longer line later in the day, so fit it in mid-morning if the wait is under 15 minutes, or grab a Lightning Lane. Grizzly River Run is a good mid-morning ride if it is warm — you will get soaked, so either do it right before a break or be prepared to dry off.
Cars Land
If you have not done Radiator Springs yet, check the single rider line. If it is under 20 minutes, send older kids and adults through. While they ride, take younger kids on Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters — both are usually 10-15 minute waits and do not have Lightning Lanes.
Cars Land is worth visiting even without riding Radiator Springs. It is one of the most beautifully designed areas in any Disney park, and it is great at night. The Cozy Cone Motel has good snacks and Flo’s V8 Café is a nice area to sit and eat.
Shows and rest stops
California Adventure has some great shows that double as rest stops. Mickey's PhilharMagic is a sit-down 3D show with air conditioning, usually a walk-on, and runs about every 20 minutes. The Animation Academy drawing class is fun for all ages. Turtle Talk with Crush is surprisingly entertaining even for adults. Use any of these to fill time between Lightning Lane windows.
For food, the Craftsman Grill inside the Grand Californian Hotel is right next to the park — you can exit near Grizzly River Run and walk straight there. It is a nice sit-down break without fighting park crowds. You have to exit the park and re-enter which is a bit of a pain but not bad-there is a special park entrance right there.
Lunch and Afternoon Break (12:00-5:00 PM)
By noon you should have ridden 8-10 attractions depending on how you handled Radiator Springs. That is a solid morning for California Adventure.
Have lunch, ride one more Lightning Lane, then head to the hotel for a break.
From the hotel, stack your evening. Book a Lightning Lane every two hours and modify return times to cluster between 5:00-8:00 PM. If you did not ride Guardians in the morning, this is your priority stack. Other evening options: Toy Story if you missed it, WEB SLINGERS for a second ride, Goofy's Sky School, and Monsters Inc. Ariel almost always has Lightning Lane availability with an immediate return time, so grab it as a fill-in when you are back at the park.
If you still need Radiator Springs, check the Lightning Lane Single Pass availability. Afternoons sometimes have good pricing and availability. Or plan to hit the single rider line when you return to the park. The wait usually dips a bit in the evening.
Full stacking strategy in my Lightning Lane guide.
Evening Return (5:00-8:30 PM)
Walk back in with your stacked Lightning Lanes. Ride, scan in, ride, scan in. Book new Lightning Lanes as you go. Use any Multiple Experiences passes you earned during the day.
Cars Land at night is worth a walk through even if you have already ridden everything. If you saved Radiator Springs for the evening, the single rider line is usually a bit shorter after dinner.
If you still have time and energy, ride your favorites again. Incredicoaster and WEB SLINGERS are both good for repeat rides. Goofy's Sky School at night is also fun. Many rides at California Adventureland have single rider lines which can be helpful when crowds are heavy and you are waiting for your next Lightning Lane.
World of Color
World of Color is the nighttime water show at California Adventure. It is worth seeing at least once. At noon each day, a virtual queue opens in the Disneyland app — set an alarm for 11:55 so you do not forget. If you get a spot, it is a great way to end the evening. You do not need a dining package, but they do sell dessert party packages with reserved viewing if you want a guaranteed spot. Even if you don’t get a spot in the virtual queue you can watch the show, you won’t be in a specific roped area but that is just fine. Just head over at night and find a place to stand, this is what I generally do.
Why California Adventure Is Harder Than Disneyland
California Adventure has fewer rides than Disneyland. You do more walking and the Lightning Lane options are thinner. On a busy day, you may feel like you are spending more time walking between areas than riding.
The flip side: the shows, food, and atmosphere at California Adventure are excellent. Cars Land is one of the most beautiful themed areas Disney has ever built. Avengers Campus is fun to walk through. And the rides that are here — Guardians, Incredicoaster, Radiator Springs, Soarin' — are some of the best, and Disney has announced additional major rides with construction already started on some.
My advice: do not try to rush this park. Use Lightning Lanes and single rider strategically, enjoy the shows and food, and accept that one or two rides may require a real wait. If you only have one day at the Disneyland Resort, spend it at Disneyland Park. If you have two or more days, give California Adventure a full day. If you have a park hopper pass: California Adventureland works great in combination with Disneyland-one park in the morning and one in the later afternoon.
FAQ
How many rides can I do in one day at California Adventure? 10-15 is realistic for a family. There are fewer rides than Disneyland, but several have long load times that slow you down. With good Lightning Lane stacking you can hit everything.
Should I buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass for Radiator Springs? If your family needs to ride together and you do not want to spend your first hour in line, yes. If older kids and adults can do single rider, skip it and save the money. The single rider line usually moves fast.
What sells out first for Lightning Lane? Guardians of the Galaxy, then Toy Story Midway Mania, then Soarin'. Book Guardians as soon as you scan into the park. Do not wait.
Is Grizzly River Run worth riding? It is fun but you will get very wet. Do it right before a break so you can change clothes, or save it for a warm afternoon. It does not have a Lightning Lane so just check the standby time. In the evening it generally has no wait.
Can I park hop from California Adventure to Disneyland? Yes, after 11:00 AM with a Park Hopper ticket. You can also start booking Disneyland Lightning Lanes at 11:00 from inside California Adventure and stack them for the evening. See my 3-Day Disneyland Itinerary for how to plan a park hopping day.
What if it rains? Most rides stay open in the rain. Bring ponchos or rain suits.
Is California Adventure good for toddlers? It is harder than Disneyland for very young kids. More of the rides have height requirements so be sure to use the Parent Swap passes. The best toddler options are Ariel, Monsters Inc., Mater's, Luigi's, Turtle Talk, Animation Academy, and Jesse's Critter Carousel. I have a separate plan for families with little kids.
